Born in Padua, he holds a degree in Sociology from Rome's ‘La Sapienza’ University. A professional journalist since 1983, he has worked in Rome and Naples.
One of the founders of Alleanza Nazionale, he was the national coordinator of the promotion committee from 1993 to 1995 and organiser of the Fiuggi congress in 1995. In 2008 he was among the founders of the Popolo della Libertà, before joining Fratelli d'Italia in 2013.
A Member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1994 to 2013, for a total of five terms, during this period he was appointed Deputy Minister for Economic Development with responsibility for Foreign Trade in the Berlusconi II Government (2001-2006) and in the Berlusconi IV Government (2009-2010).
In 2018 he was elected to the Senate in Veneto on the Fratelli d'Italia lists. He was in charge of the Party's Department of Business and Productive Activities until June 2021 when he was elected President of the Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic (Copasir).
In the elections of 25 September 2022, he was elected senator in the Veneto constituency.
