Gilberto Pichetto Fratin

Minister of the Environment and Energy Security of Italy

Minister for the Environment and Energy Security. Gilberto Pichetto Fratin graduated in Economics and Commerce at the University of Turin. A Chartered Accountant and Professor of Accounting, he has always worked as a business consultant in the corporate, tax, business and professional sectors. He has held public offices in municipal and regional administrations before and after being elected to the Senate of the Republic with the Popolo della Libertà and Forza Italia during the 16th legislature (2008-2013) and in the 17th Legislature. He was secretary of the Fifth Standing Committee on Economic Planning, Budget, from 2010 Group Leader of the Popolo delle Libertà and a member of the Eleventh Standing Committee on Labour, Social Security, and the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the phenomenon of accidents at work. In the previous legislature he served as group leader in the Senate Budget Committee and in the Draghi government he was appointed Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Economic Development.

In the course of his term of office, on the basis of the delegations assigned to him by Minister Giorgetti, Deputy Minister Pichetto is following up on numerous issues particularly related to the automotive sector, trade and industrial policies.To this end, thematic tables have been set up to deal with the various sectors for an always active and proactive discussion with all the stakeholders involved. The deputy minister is also working to define an industrial policy strategy aimed at identifying the measures needed to relaunch the country and the Piedmont area, taking into consideration, for the latter, the advantage of making use of the area`s potential in terms of scientific skills, infrastructures, and existing professionalism, from universities to companies and workers. Lastly, he worked tirelessly so that Parliament could approve the establishment of the ‘Italian Research Centre for Automotive and Aerospace’ as part of the ‘Support bis’ measure.

The centre, based in Turin, is aimed at creating an infrastructure that uses artificial intelligence methods, in order to increase technology transfer and encourage aggregation between the automotive and aerospace sectors, a strategic condition to push the country towards innovation more generally. A concrete commitment, therefore, to facilitate and stimulate the competitiveness of Italian companies, accelerating recovery and promoting the creation of new jobs.In the 19th Legislature, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, in the Piedmont 02 Plurinominal College. In the current Meloni government, he was appointed Minister for the Environment and Energy Security.
